Quality of Humor in Relationships Survey

Ronald D. Rogge, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Dept of Clinical & Social Sciences in Psychology

If you are …

1) Currently in a romantic relationship
2) Both you and your partner are at least 18 years old

… then I would like to invite you to participate in an online survey.
STUDY PURPOSE - This page describes a research study that Dr. Ronald D. Rogge, principal investigator from the University of Rochester, is conducting in order to learn more about how humor functions in romantic relationships. You and your partner must be at least 18 years of age and in a romantic relationship to participate in this research study. The study has been reviewed and approved by the University of Rochester Research Subjects Review Board.

STUDY PROCEDURE – The study involves an online survey that will take approximately 10-15 minutes. The survey contains some personal questions about you, your relationship, and intimate behaviors. We would like you to complete the whole survey, but you may skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. We expect that 2000 subjects will participate in the study. Students from the Psychology Department of the University of Rochester will receive 0.5 units of extra credit in exchange for participation. Note: students will only be given credit if they meet the requirements for the survey (so that they are at least eligible to complete the entire survey).

CONFIDENTIALITY – Responses will be kept in an anonymous manner. This means that there is no way for your identity to be linked to your responses. The responses of all subjects will be stored numerically and only the investigators on the study will have access to that data. Only summarized data will be presented at meetings or in any publications.

INDIVIDUAL FEEDBACK - At the end of the initial survey, you will be offered a chance to view some of your own results in comparison to the rest of the sample. You will be given feedback on: your sense of humor, your general irritability, and on 5 different dimensions of relationship functioning. Please note, this individual feedback is provided for your use only. The investigators will not have access to the individual feedback given and will only analyze the data at an aggregate level.

RISKS - If you participate, you may feel uncomfortable answering some questions. However, as mentioned above, you are free to skip any questions you find uncomfortable. This means that (with the exception of a few questions assessing eligibility) the webpages of the survey will allow subjects to leave questions blank.

BENEFITS - There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this study. However, some couples tend to find that taking time out to answer questions about their relationships can heighten their awareness of themselves and their relationships.

VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION - Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. You are free not to participate or withdraw at any time, for whatever reason without penalty or loss of benefit to which you are entitled. Your answers will be kept strictly anonymous.
